The Acting Zonal Director of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Harry Erin, has reaffirmed the agency's dedication to tackling the scourge of illegal mining activities in Kwara State.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Commission's Office in Ilorin by Commissioner of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Afees Abolore, Erin highlighted the detrimental impact of illegal mining on both the local and national economy. He emphasized that unchecked illegal mining poses a significant threat and assured that the EFCC remains steadfast in addressing this criminal activity.
Erin underscored the economic potential of solid minerals, noting Kwara State's abundance of mineral deposits such as lithium, lepidolite, petroleum, and gold. He emphasized the importance of proper harnessing of these resources to sustain the country's economy, pointing out the substantial financial losses incurred due to illegal mining activities.
The Zonal Director outlined the grave consequences of illegal mining, including socio-economic destruction, insecurity, banditry, and other criminal activities. He expressed confidence in the EFCC's capability to combat this menace effectively and enforce laws against illegal miners.
Acknowledging the support of the Kwara State government in the EFCC's anti-corruption efforts, Erin called for continued collaboration to curb illegal mining activities. In response, Commissioner Abolore commended the EFCC's initiatives in sanitizing the mining sector and pledged the government's partnership in addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining and non-payment of royalties by operators in the state.
The exchange between the EFCC and the Kwara State government reflects a shared commitment to combating illegal mining and promoting transparency and accountability in the mining sector. Through collaborative efforts, both parties aim to safeguard the state's resources and contribute to sustainable economic development.
